🤩 #uchase #funfacts #interestingfacts #didyouknow #weirdfacts #unknownfacts #olympics #olympicsfacts #strangefacts #newfacts #themoreyouknow
That's not your sound machine, that's a piece of unscathed Amazonian rainforest
Using data taken from Earth and space, scientists observed that forests that have been logged or burned multiple times have quieter animal noises than unharmed sections, leading scientists to believe that species that were once present have left the area. With satellite records from our #Landsat program, acoustic recordings from teams on the ground, and lidar measurements, the scientists were able to look at decades of data to study areas that have been deforested and logged repeatedly. The Landsat program recently marked its 50th anniversary in space. With such long records, scientists are able to “see back in time” and use historical data and new techniques to study the impact of humans on our natural world.
Video Description: The video starts with a close-up of a forest canopy before zooming out slowly to show an area with countless trees, clouds, and many rivers. The video ends with the entirety of South America in view. The audio of birds chirping is one from an intact (undisturbed) Amazon forest fragment, recorded as part of this field study.
Things aren’t always in black and white…but sometimes they are!
#ICYMI: We talked to Webb science visuals developers Joe DePasquale and Alyssa Pagan from @Space_Telescopes, who translate black and white raw data from @NASAWebb into the stunning, colorful imagery we’re familiar with; and colorblind content creator @NatashaCaudill, who sees the world in black and white and similarly “translates” her perspective to her audience.
Watch to learn about how your favorite Webb images come together and about accessibility in science.
